The United States Mint's First Spouse gold bullion coins features a portrait on the obverse, and on the reverse a unique design symbolic of the spouses's life and work. In instances where a president held office without a first spouse, the coin bears "an obverse image emblematic of Liberty as depicted on a circulating coin of that era and a reverse image emblematic of themes of that President's life."
The United States Mint certifies that this coin was struck in accordance with legislation passed by Congress and signed by the President on December 22, 2005, as Public Law 109-145. This coin was produced by the Department of the Treasury, United States Mint. This coin is legal tender of the United States.
Coin Designs
The obverse (heads side) design features a reproduction of the Draped Bust Half Cent obverse minted in the early 1800's.
The reverse (tails) design depicts President Jefferson's grave marker at Monticello with the epitaph he requested to reflect his most significant accomplishments.
